Last week, the Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton, sued the Food and Drug Administration over the federal government’s decision to block the state from importing the anesthetic thiopental sodium from a foreign distributor.
The state prison system wants to add a drug, thiopental sodium, previously used for lethal injections from 1999 to 2011, and pentobarbital as the two drugs permitted for lethal injections in the future.

The new policy in Ohio means a dose of either pentobarbital or thiopental sodium, an anaesthetic, will be used.
